YOGA IN ALBUQUERQUE & SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO

Yoga is a science of life aiming to bring balance between the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual body―between action, feelings, intelligence and the Higher Self.  Yoga brings health and peace through movement, breathe awareness, relaxation and meditation techniques. This ancient philosophy thought to pre-date 3000 BC and believed to have originated around the Indus Valley in Northern India, comes from the Hindu Vedas. The word "Yoga" literally means union or joining in Sanskrit.

Yoga is an applied science of the mind and body. Its practice and study bring about a natural balance of body and mind in which the state of health can manifest itself. Yoga itself does not create health; rather, it creates an environment that allows the individual to come to his own state of dynamic health balance. Yoga teaches that a healthy person is a harmoniously integrated unit of body, emotions, thought and spirit.

Yoga Poses

Good health requires a simple, natural diet, exercise in fresh air, a serene and untroubled mind and the awareness that the deepest and highest Self is identical with the spirit of the Universe. As a result, Yoga becomes a philosophy that offers instruction and insight into every aspect of life: the spiritual, the mental, the emotional and the physical. Of course, because it is all-encompassing, anyone who wants to pick and choose from its options can do so without being disappointed.

Many people think that yoga exercise is stretching. But while stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility.

This is done through the performance of poses, each of which has specific physical benefits. The poses can be done quickly in succession, creating heat in the body through movement or more slowly to increase stamina and perfect the alignment of the pose. There is an ideal way that each pose should be done, although not all yogis will agree about what that is.

Yoga begins by working with the body on a structural level, helping to align the vertebrae, increase flexibility, and strengthen muscles and connective tissue. At the same time, internal organs are toned and reenergized; the epidermal, digestive, lymphatic, cardiovascular, and pulmonary systems are purified of toxins and waste matter; the nervous and endocrine systems are balanced and toned; and brain cells are nourished and stimulated. The end result is increased physical strengths and flexibility, emotional stability, mental clarity, and spiritual awareness bringing about a greater sense of overall well-being.

Yoga Poses

Because Yoga works on so many different levels, it has great potential as an effective therapy for chronic diseases and conditions that do not respond well to conventional treatment methods. For this reason, children with Down Syndrome and other developmental disabilities who practice Yoga often surprise their parents and teachers with their quick mastery of basic motor, communicative, and cognitive skills. The same Yoga routine can help children with learning disabilities develop greater concentration, balance, and composure in their daily lives. Everyone gains some level of benefit. The only requirements are proper instruction and regular practice. This is specifically the case of Super Brain Yoga.

The greatest benefit from practicing asanas comes when we learn how to relax in a given pose. Contrary to what most of us have been taught, real relaxation results from a state of deep concentration, in which the mind is totally focused on a single object. During the practice of asanas, the object of concentration is the body. The student focuses his mind on the incoming and outgoing breaths, the steady flexion and extension of different muscle groups, or other bodily sensations. Ideally this inward focus should be maintained throughout the entire Yoga class.
